Greek language school - Men/Women of Ikaria

Lexi-Logos invites you on Wednesday 30 September 2026 at 7.30 pm to the photography exhibition and book presentation for Birgit Urban’s *Men/Women of Ikaria* (published in English and Greek), in the presence of the photographer and author. A few words about Birgit from Birgit herself follow below:

About me and the story behind this exhibition
My name is Birgit Urban, I am German, and I am living in Brussels, working in European politics for many years. I am coming to Ikaria on a regular basis for almost 10 years.
Apart from being interested in photography and writing a bit about Ikaria (see my blog: www.betweenmyworlds.com) I am also the President of the non-profit organisation “Friends of Ikaria” – an association, which is aiming at collecting funds to support projects on Ikaria (www.friendsofikaria.com).
This project – the books and the exhibition about the younger people, living on Ikaria – is very close to my heart. Getting to know to these men and women on Ikaria, I could realize, how difficult it was and still is to live with the consequences of the economic and financial crisis in Greece and in particular on Ikaria.
Many dreams had been ruined, but these young people, whose story you will follow in this exhibition, adapted to the new situation and became resilient and dedicated to put roots on Ikaria. To my observation they are bringing with them the experiences from different places they had been living, and they link them with the traditions of Ikaria. In that way, new ideas are born.
And in respecting the cultural heritage of this island, these young people are developing perspectives, so that they cannot only make their living on this remote island, but that they could also contribute to its unique characteristics … may it be in its nature, its history or its culture.
To this background I am happy that these men and women sat with me, dedicating me their time and their stories so that I could write about them. In sharing their stories with you, I am trying to shine a little bit the light on those, about whom we are not talking so often, when it comes to stories about Ikaria. Nevertheless, we should listen to them, because their ideas and activities are leading this beautiful island to the future.
